Executive Vice President and General Counsel & Assistant Corporate Secretary
William “Byl” Herrmann is Executive Vice President and General Counsel & Assistant Corporate Secretary, serving in this position since October 2024. He sits on the company's Executive Leadership Team and leads the Law department. In addition, as Assistant Corporate Secretary, he supports and advises the Amtrak Board of Directors on corporate governance matters.
Byl is responsible for setting the long-term strategic vision, priorities and annual operating plan for the Law department within the context of Amtrak’s strategic and corporate plans and objectives. The department includes Commercial, Litigation and Compliance law groups, as well as Claims Management.
Byl joined the Amtrak Law department in 1999 and held a wide range of roles with progressing levels of responsibility; additionally, he served a year as Vice President (VP) Human Resources.
Before assuming his current role, Byl was VP and Senior Managing Deputy General Counsel & Assistant Corporate Secretary. He managed or oversaw litigation, corporate transactions, legal compliance and the Corporate Secretary’s office.
Prior to joining Amtrak, Byl focused on labor and employment law and policy, including time with the American Trucking Associations and the New York City Mayor's Office of Labor Relations.
Byl graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with a pre-Law concentration. He holds a Juris Doctor degree from the Case Western Reserve University School of Law.
