More Sustainable than Flying or Driving

Travel Sustainably by Train: Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

At Amtrak we're committed to sustainability and are actively taking steps to improve our environmental impact.  Since 2010, we've reduced our greenhouse gas emmissions by 20%.  Our goal is to double that number by 2030 and we're well on our way by reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and investing in an energy efficient fleet.

Even today, intercity travel on Amtrak is cleaner and more sustainable than most alternatives.

MORE SUSTAINABLE TODAY

Did you know riding Amtrak is one of the most sustainable ways to travel? That's because it's 46% more energy-efficient than driving and 34% more than flying. Plus, our electric trains produce up to 72% less greenhouse gas emissions than planes, and 83% less than cars. But we're just getting started.

EVEN GREENER TRAINS ARE ON THE WAY

We're not slowing down anytime soon. Literally. The all-new, faster-than-ever Acela will reduce energy consumption by at least 20% more than our current models. And that carries over to the onboard experience as well - we're expanding our recycling initiatives and offering a new, sustainable food and beverage program for passengers like you.

OUR VISION FOR A BETTER TOMORROW

Commitment matters to us. So when we say we're all in on net-zero emissions by 2045, we mean it. No one can see the future, but everyone can count on Amtrak continuing to lead the way in sustainable travel - today, tomorrow, and for decades to come.
