How to Use Vouchers to Purchase Train Tickets

eVouchers

In certain situations when you downgrade or cancel a trip, you can receive some or all of your money back in the form of an eVoucher. eVouchers store your ticket value electronically in our reservation and ticketing system, ready for you to apply as payment toward future trip purchases. You can even pay for a reservation using an eVoucher and a credit card at the same time.

Redeeming Your eVouchers

eVouchers can be easily redeemed on Amtrak.com or through the Amtrak app. One or more eVouchers containing the same name can be used to pay for a reservation as long as the eVoucher name matches the full name of one of the travelers in the reservation. This can be accomplished either while logged in or as a guest by manually entering the eVoucher number(s) at the time of purchase. To reduce fraudulent use of your eVouchers, you will be asked to verify ownership by entering some information related to the eVoucher being redeemed.

You can also redeem eVouchers at an Amtrak ticket office or by phone at 1-800-USA-RAIL. eVoucher redemption is currently not available at Amtrak kiosks. Make sure to bring the eVoucher receipt (or the information necessary for the customer service representative to locate the eVoucher) and proper identification to the ticket office for redemption.

Rules & Restrictions Summary

Depending on the fare rules and terms of the original ticket purchase, funds in an eVoucher can be:

  • Refundable: returned in cash at stations only, returned as a refund check through an Amtrak Refund office only or credited back to the credit card used to pay for the original ticket. There will be a 25% cancellation fee if the return of a paper value ticket created the eVoucher.
  • Non-refundable: cannot be refunded as money back but can be used to pay for future travel.
  • A Combination of refundable and non-refundable amounts.

The value of an eVoucher used as a form of payment (e.g., an eVoucher is redeemed) is non-refundable. If a reservation is canceled or downgraded, the value will be stored in a new, non-refundable eVoucher.

The funds in an eVoucher will be held in the name of the Primary Passenger of the original reservation (the first passenger listed in a reservation). An eVoucher is not transferable and can only be redeemed by the person whose name appears on it. If redeemed for travel the eVoucher name must match the full name of one of the travelers in the reservation.

eVouchers are non-transferable. eVouchers that are bought, sold, auctioned or transferred to or from a third party are prohibited and the value will be confiscated and voided and travel will not be permitted. By redeeming an eVoucher, the Passenger named on the eVoucher acknowledges the content of these terms and conditions and agrees to abide by them.

An eVoucher will expire one year after issuance of the original ticket. A refundable amount left in an eVoucher can be refunded up to the refund expiration date of the eVoucher; this date is based on when initial payment was made for the original travel and may be less than one year after issuance.

When an eVoucher is redeemed for future travel, any unused balance will remain on the original eVoucher.

Transportation Vouchers

If you were issued an electronic Transportation Voucher from us, there are a few things you need to know before you redeem it for travel.

Redeeming Your Transportation Vouchers

The easiest way to redeem your Transportation Voucher is while making a reservation on Amtrak.com. Just select Transportation Voucher as your form of payment when you get to the Payment step of the booking process.

  • If you are logged in, you'll see a list of your active Transportation Vouchers available. Select the Tranportation Vouchers you'd like to redeem from the list.
  • If you are not logged in, just enter the Transportation Voucher number(s) you want to use.

The voucher amount will then be applied to your reservation. You may apply multiple vouchers to a reservation. If you have multiple reservations, you may apply your vouchers to any of those reservations.

Viewing Your Transportation Vouchers

Log in to Amtrak.com and go to the 'My Account' page. You'll see a list of all the Transportation Vouchers associated with your email address. 'Active' vouchers are those that have not been redeemed and are available to use. 'Expired' vouchers have passed their expiration date and are no longer available to use. 'Redeemed' vouchers are those you've already used for purchasing travel.

Rules & Restrictions Summary

You can only use a Transportation Voucher once. If you don't use the entire value of your voucher when it is redeemed, the usused amount will be forfeited.

Transportation vouchers are non-transferrable; the person named on the Transportation Voucher must be one of the passengers who is traveling. The name used in the reservation must exactly match the name indicated on the Transportation Voucher.

Transportation Vouchers expire one year from the date they are issued.
