Recognition & Awards

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a globally recognized benchmark certification for quality design and consideration of resource efficiency, material toxicity, human health, and construction impacts related to buildings. The certification standard is organized around six categories where the project team can target credits specific to design and/or construction issues: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation. Amtrak received Silver designation for interior construction at our new Washington, DC headquarters by the Green Building Certification Institute in early 2018.

Amtrak advanced to Gold Level recognition in the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Sustainability Commitment in May 2017. Amtrak realized reductions in electrical consumption at facilities through energy efficiency lighting projects, automated building controls and facility-based energy plans. Sustainability initiatives include adopting green building codes and standards such as the International Green Construction Code (IgCC) and obtaining LEED certifications for stations. We expanded connectivity options and made equipment upgrades for customers to travel to and from stations on their bicycles.

Through the Sustainability Commitment, APTA recognizes its member organizations for continued achievements in sustainability. Public transportation agencies and businesses voluntarily choose to join the Commitment and pledge to implement processes and actions that create continuous improvements in environmental, social, and financial sustainability. Based on specific measurable achievements, organizations are given Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze Level recognition. Amtrak was a founding signatory of the APTA Sustainability Commitment in 2009 and received Bronze Level recognition in 2013.
