Guide to Fares
Ticket Waivers
Amtrak is waiving all change fees for reservations made with Saver fares through December 31, 2024, including reservations booked with points. A fare difference may apply for itinerary changes. Cancellation fees still apply to fares that have cancellation fees. The removal of some restrictions on Multi-Ride tickets on the Northeast Corridor is extended through December 31, 2024.
When you book your trip through Amtrak.com and the app, you have multiple fare options to meet your unique travel needs. Here are some helpful tips on getting the optimal fares:
- Make your reservations early to get the best fares.
- Fares are generally higher during holidays and peak travel periods.
- Fares can vary based on the day of travel and the time of day.
- Reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance of travel.

When reviewing your journey options, you’ll be able to see price adjustments for applied discounts and promotion codes, special web-only fares, and accommodation charges (where applicable).
Onboard Fares
On most Amtrak trains, the onboard fare is typically higher than the regularly available fare. To secure the best available fare, we strongly recommend purchasing tickets prior to boarding the train.
